Genesis HealthCare - "A Campus on a Campus"

Overview:

Genesis HealthCare is a national network of long-term care and assisted living facilities in the United States. WorkSource Partners has provided employee placement and career development services for Genesis for over three years. In 2001, WorkSource partnered with the New England Regional Genesis Leadership team to design and launch the "Campus on a Campus" program at - Heritage Hall /Genesis HealthCare (Agawam, MA). This program provides career development and education for their entry-level employees.

Goals/Partnerships:

Heritage Hall/Genesis' continues to support innovative measures to meet the challenge of hiring and retaining Certified Nurse Aides (CNAs) and in recruiting Registered Nurses (RNs) and Licensed Practical Nurses (LPNs). By investing in their front-line employees through education and career development, Genesis aims to:

  • Increase retention;
  • Improve quality of care;
  • Increase ability to fill nursing positions by promoting from within.

The "Campus on a Campus" program is an employee development program that combines on-site pre-college and college education with intensive career counseling efforts. Partnering with Holyoke Community College (HCC), and Springfield Technical Community College (STCC) employees are now offered the career development support and education they need to advance. Initially designed for entry-level employees, the program has recently expanded to include all employees.

Program includes:

  • Career coaching and counseling
  • Adult Basic Education (ABE) programming and courses, including computer based learning
  • Workshops covering topics such as: Time Management, Conflict Resolution, and Stress Management
  • Pre-nursing college courses offered on campus
Results:
  • Career Development action plans for over 240 of their employees
  • Over 60 individuals enrolled in college courses
  • Over 20 employees have begun studying for GEDs and/or training for English improvement
  • Turnover costs and agency fees have decreased by 25%
  • Approximately 40 CNAs have begun taking prerequisite nursing courses
  • 10% of those CNAs participating in the program have enrolled in or applied to nursing programs
